China should be putting pressure on Russian President Vladimir Putin to “cease and desist” his invasion of Ukraine instead of considering aid to Russia during their “immoral” invasion, says Shadow Foreign Minister Simon Birmingham.

“It is in China’s interests for that to happen in terms of what it would mean for stabilising the world economy and for enabling normalised trade flows,” Mr Birmingham told Sky News Australia.

“It would be a very concerning and very dramatic escalation for China to become involved through the provision of weapons, through the provision of any type of military assistance to Russia.”

FBI Director Christopher Wray has told Fox News the virus “most likely” came from a lab in Wuhan. “This is at the time when the United States is also pressuring China over the 12-point peace plan and the prospect of China … directly supporting the Russians militarily,” Professor Blaxland told Sky News Australia. 'And there’s rumours circulating of China being prepared to backfill Russian equipment in eastern Russia to enable the Russians to relocate some of their equipment to bolster their capabilities in the war in Ukraine. “It’s not exactly clear that there’s a correlation … but certainly it is interesting the timing, that this is now adding extra pressure on China, this is coming on top of significant trade streams.”
