The Australian government has committed to continue lobbying for the release of academic Yang Hengjun from prison in China after its latest high-level diplomatic engagement with Beijing.

Australia's Foreign Minister says the government has conveyed its"shock" to China after Beijing handed a death penalty to detained academic Yang Hengjun in response to allegations of espionage.

“In relation to Dr Yang – we will continue to advocate on his behalf, and I reiterated that Australians found the sentence imposed shocking,” the Foreign Minister said. She also mentioned having raised concerns about other Australian death penalty cases active in China:"As you know, Australia opposes the death penalty in all circumstances for all peoples."

Beijing, in response, has maintained its actions are well within judicial standards and proportionate to the severity of Dr Yang’s alleged espionage activities. The Australian Foreign Minister said her counterpart acknowledged “important differences” which persisted between Canberra and Beijing despite their lucrative trading relationship.
