China’s embassy has warned against abandoning the “One China” policy, as Defence Minister Richard Marles expresses concern over ballistic missile drills.

| Foreign Minister Penny Wong has protested to her Chinese counterpart over Beijing’s escalation of live-fire drills in Taiwan, including firing missiles that landed in Japan’s exclusive economic zone.

In a statement published on its website, the Chinese embassy in Canberra said any move by Australia to abandon the One China policy was a “red line and bottom line that cannot be crossed”.to US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s visit there this weekSenator Wong revealed she had expressed her concerns with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi at a meeting in Phnom Penh, while Australian diplomats have reiterated that message in exchanges with the Chinese government.

Asked whether tensions would change how Australia dealt with China, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese told the ABC: “We need to stay the course that we’re on, which is to seek cooperation and positive relations with China where we can, but stand up for Australian values and Australian national interests.

“I want to stress again that the one-China principle is the overwhelming consensus of the international community, the political foundation for China’s relations with other countries, the core of China’s core interests, and a red line and bottom line that cannot be crossed,” the statement said.
