Christmas, Black Friday online sales boom sparks parcel delivery spike

Strong pre-Christmas online sales mean Australia Post has hired an extra 3,500 staff to cope with a massive increase in parcel deliveries compared to this time last year.

Forget Santa's helpers, it is the parcel delivery drivers doing the heavy lifting this year in the final weeks before Christmas.Australia Post says the spike started with Black Friday online salesAustralia Post and one of Australia's top online sales sites are reporting a jump of nearly 40 per cent in pre-Christmas sales and parcel deliveries."We're still relatively early in the month … but we are seeing significant growth already compared to last year," he said.

"We've hired extra staff, put on more [delivery] trucks. We're working around the clock to deliver [parcels]," Mr Starr said.
