More women are giving birth via caesarean section than ever before in NSW, as the rate of vaginal births drops to a record low.
As the rate of normal deliveries continued its downward trajectory, more than one in three births were caesareans in 2018 – 34.5 per cent up from 32.2 per cent four years earlier.The Royal Prince Alfred Hospital had the lowest rate of normal vaginal births of all major birthing hospitals and Bankstown-Lidcombe hospital the highest .
Forceps deliveries were most common at the Royal Hospital for Women in Randwick, where more than one in 10 births involved forceps. The hospital also had the highest rate of third-degree tears .
