Thousands of Sydneysiders began the march from Town Hall to Hyde Park on Wednesday evening, packing out George Street to demand stronger climate action as bushfires continue to rage across the state.
Buses are diverting away from Elizabeth Street and Park Street due to the march. Up to nine bus stops are being missed. Some buses are delayed by up to 30 minutes.Chloe Rafferty, one of the organisers, said she was angry about the lack of climate action from all levels of government."The state is angry, Sydney is angry," she said.
Fire Brigade Employees Union State Secretary Leighton Drury has been a firefighter for 20 years and said the fires ravaging NSW are the “worst we’ve had in decades”."We’re on the bones of our ass,” he said. “There are now fewer professional firefighters than there were in 2011". "We’ve got no water, a state and country in drought, professional firefighters are spread thin and our volunteers are exhausted".
