A 13-year-old girl found and helped capture an invasive Peron's tree frog after a tourist's photo posted online alerted authorities of the biosecurity threat.
A lavender farm in southern Tas mania is in the middle of its peak tourist season, but one guest has had their stay cut short due to the work of a citizen scientist .
He uploaded the photograph to the biodiversity website iNaturalist where another user identified the frog as invasive and reported it to Biosecurity Tasmania. The mother-daughter duo then set to work alongside biosecurity officer Debbie Hilston and found the frog within 10 minutes."I look straight across … all I see is this growth on the branch," the 13-year-old said.Ms Hilston said there were usually "pretty slim" chances to capture a species just weeks after a sighting.Mr Helmich said it was a good example of the work that Biosecurity Tasmania did to maintain the state's biosecurity and ecological environment.
