Coronavirus infections in the City of Melbourne have surpassed the hotspot of Hume, with the CBD recording the highest ever number of active cases in a single Victorian municipality.
The number of active coronavirus cases in the city centre has surged by almost 100 since Thursday, new data from the state's health department shows.
More than 70 per cent of all cases recorded in the City of Melbourne since the start of the pandemic are infections which are currently active, with most spreading to residents living in those areas in the past 10 days. Wyndham, in the city's south-west, also grew by 18 more active cases in the past day to total of 151 infections.
Fourteen more healthcare workers also tested positive to the virus, after outbreaks spread through three emergency departments at the Royal Melbourne Hospital, Sunshine Hospital and Northern Hospital within a week. Cases of community transmission – where the source of infection cannot be determined – rose by 32 to 509.Other local government areas also recorded large increase in active cases, including Moonee Valley, in the city's north-west, which had an extra 36 infections, bringing its total to 120.
Coronavirus infections are also spreading throughout Victoria's regional areas, including Geelong and Bendigo, which have so far avoided stringent lock-down measures enforced in Melbourne and the Mitchell Shire.
