Witnesses to a parliamentary committee have rejected suggestion the proposed Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander advisory body would force a change of Australia Day or Anzac Day.
has dismissed claims the Indigenous Voice to parliament will have an effective veto over Australia Day, or even have the power to cancel Anzac Day commemorations.
Mr Hayne, who served on the High Court from 1997 and 2015, told a parliamentary committee in Canberra that “veto is not available”.“People are trying to define some sharp line of the boundary of the scope of the power,” he said.“The Voice will not waste its social or political capital by exploring the outer range of its scope of representation. That is an unreal case or a distorting possibility or an extreme example.
“This is not simply about preventing litigation it’s about inviting litigation, it’s about trailing your coat with imprecision knowing you will get litigation,” Professor Craven said.

‘Absurd situation’: Aboriginal teenager begs judge to allow adoptionAn 18-year-old Indigenous man has found himself in an “absurd situation” as he fights a legal battle in the NSW Supreme Court to be adopted by foster parents who have cared for him since he was two years old, according to Sky News host Cory Bernardi. While he was only seven when his Aboriginality was revealed, due to his foster parents being white the law states that, as a first preference, an Aboriginal child is to be adopted by someone in the Aboriginal community to which their birth parent belongs. Incredibly, in this age of identity politics, his cultural identity is being made for him,” Mr Bernardi said. “This is an absurd situation brought on by a bunch of do-gooders who have no idea about what is best for children.”
