The non-fiction judges — author Michael McGirr and reviewer Simon Caterson — said they read an extraordinary array of books by authors who “wrote with courage, conviction and in their prose convey a unique awareness of themselves and the wider world”. Incredibly, in this age of identity politics, his cultural identity is being made for him,” Mr Bernardi said. “This is an absurd situation brought on by a bunch of do-gooders who have no idea about what is best for children.”
