Portions of the continent have been rocked by record-breaking temperatures nearing the 40s this week in a strange turn from the mid-winter average of about 15C.
The southern half of the continent has felt the worst of the heatwave, which began in late July and is expected to peak in coming days.Chile hit a national record in August with temperatures reaching 38.7C, while Argentinian capital Buenos Aires smashed a previous daily record by more than 9C on a 30C day in the start of August., said several weather stations in the country had registered temperatures higher than 35C on August 1.
This is between 10C and 20C more than the usual temperature for this time of year, according to data from the European Centre for Medium Range Weather Forecasts. Brazil has also experienced temperatures above 35C and 38C this week, according to the country’s Instituto Nacional de Meteorologia. The heat has rivalled that of the recent European heatwave – even though South America is meant to be in winter.Unbelievable temperatures up to 38.9C in the Chilean Andine areas in mid winter !
