The Queensland government will lift a 10-year royalty freeze on coal next week to raise billions in badly needed revenue.

A spokesman for Queensland Treasurer Cameron Dick declined to comment on the details, saying all would be revealed in the budget, which faces huge spending demands in health and hospitals. But Queensland Resources Council chief executive and former Howard government resources minister Ian Macfarlane said there would be blowback against federal Labor.“You can’t win the trust of regional Queenslanders when the first order of business of your state colleagues is to hike up taxes on coal – the very commodity that keeps regional Queensland ticking,” he said.
“If the Palaszczuk government sees extra coal royalties as a quick fix to plug a budget hole, what’s to stop them going after other high-price commodities too?
