The Coalition has called for the Governor-General to strip former Qantas CEO Alan Joyce of his Order of Australia medal over his conduct while managing the airline.
Liberal Nationals Senator James McGrath calls for former Qantas CEO Alan Joyce to be stripped of Order of Australia medal
Liberal National Party Senator James McGrath argued in Senate Estimates on Tuesday that Mr Joyce had brought the Order of Australia into “disrepute”. Under Mr Joyce, Qantas was the crown jewel of Brand Finance’s 2019 list of the strongest brands but has since fallen all the way to number 41. Then, there was the revelation 1,700 baggage handlers were illegally sacked by Qantas – for which the airline has faced more than $100 million in compensation payments.
Qantas did however revoke more than $9.2 million of bonuses after a governance review found Mr Joyce engaged in a “command and control” leadership approach. Mr Albanese has denied ever having requested the upgrades but he has not definitively ruled out the possibility someone from his office requesting upgrades for him.
