Free speech advocates are celebrating after the Albanese government announced it was abandoning its controversial proposal to crack down on social media misinformation.
The Albanese government is facing calls to apologise for proposing"censorship laws" as free speech advocates celebrate Labor dumping its online misinformation bill in a"humiliating backdown".
The announcement was welcomed by the federal Coalition, with shadow communications minister David Coleman declaring it a “humiliating backdown by Labor and a win for the free speech for all Australians”. Mr Coleman said the legislation contained the type of powers usually seen “in a dystopian novel” as he called on the government to apologise for proposing the “censorship laws”.
“The Government should be condemned and should apologise to the Australian people for trying to impose their censorship laws on Australia.” Those outside parliament warning about the threat it posed to free speech extended from the Australian Human Rights Commission and constitutional expert Anne Twomey to civil society groups on the libertarian right.
"This is a huge victory for us and for every single Australian who believes in protecting free speech,” Mr Marlow told SkyNews.com.au.
