Critics within the opposition are pushing back against plans to recognise Indigenous Australians in the Constitution
while also working to stop Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander disadvantage, Peter Dutton says.
Some Liberal MPs are preparing to push back on the plan, warning against Constitutional change based on popular progressive causes. The possibility of a treaty with Indigenous communities or truth and reconciliation process will be strongly opposed by some in the Coalition partyroom.Mr Dutton in 2019 called the Voice proposal “a third chamber”, echoing criticism of the plan led by then prime minister Malcolm Turnbull.
“We’re listening to it respectfully because reconciliation is incredibly important, but so too is practical action. I want to make sure that in 12 months’ time – and this is a fault of both parties – when we’ve been in government we’ve failed those young boys and girls who are still the subject of domestic violence and sexual assault victims on a regular basis in these communities.”
