Shadow environment minister Jonathon Duniam has expressed his determination in getting the McPhillamys gold mine ban overturned after he brought a disallowance motion to parliament to repeal the decision made by his Labor counterpart to scrap a mining project in rural New South Wales.

The Coalition has flagged it will make a fresh bid to overturn Environment Minister Tanya Plibersek ’s decision which stopped the $1 billion McPhillamys gold mine in its tracks.

Speaking to Sky News Australia host Chris Kenny on Monday evening, Mr Duniam said the Coalition would not “give up” because the allowing the mine to proceed was in the “national interest”. Ms Plibersek said the move would “not to stop the mine” after the company indicated to her it had assessed around “four sites and 30 potential options” for the tailings dam.

The shadow environment minister said Senators will soon be given a “second chance” to “back in a bill” to overturn the decision to sanction the gold mine in Blayney and would “keep up the fight and hopefully we get the right outcome”. He said the legislation needed a rewrite to clarify and provide robust guidelines for potential investors to have a clearer understanding on “who they’re dealing with”.

Mr Duniam said the OLALC “actually did bell the cat” on the “confected claims” brought by individuals who had banded together.
