Cochlear is one of a number of ASX-listed companies that have bypassed the diplomatic deep freeze and built strong government relationships in China.
A strategic shift is occurring in Australian business relations with China, as companies deepen their government relationships and step up their capital investment in Chinese-based facilities.
This aligns closely with the Penfolds global sourcing strategy, which already includes wines made in Australia, California and, from August, Bordeaux.China has a rich wine heritage, with regions spread across the breadth of the country, and Treasury Wine should be able to cash in on the Chinese government’s focus on sustainable grape growing and winemaking in Ningxia and Yunnan .
“We’ve been in China for over 25 years now. And we started small. We started with a lot of education and working with the Chinese government, training and educating surgeons, and over time we built up our business there.“We’ve now got over 50,000 people – mostly children – in China who have one of our implants. The factory was the next logical step in having a very long-term view of China and a long-term presence in China to expand from just commercial operations to manufacturing locally.
“Where we built the factory, there is a block of land next door, which is owned by the Sichuan Innovation and Entrepreneur Promotion Association.
