Steve Harley, the renowned rock star and frontman of Cockney Rebel, has died at his Suffolk home. The 73-year-old musician was in the midst of a battle with cancer.
He had postponed his ongoing tour just last month for treatment. His official social media page shared an update in February which read: "Due to on-going treatment for cancer, Steve cannot commit to any concerts in 2024. Steve is hoping next year will be altogether different. He appreciates all you kind words and good wishes. Team SH."
This news prompted a wave of support from fans, with comments pouring in wishing him a speedy recovery. One fan wrote: "All the best with your treatment Steve, here's hoping for a full recovery."With his band Cockney Rebel, Steve crafted a successful music career that enjoyed immense popularity across Europe. Their song 'Sebastian', from their debut album with EMI in 1973, soared to the number one spot in The Netherlands and Belgium.
However, it was in 1975 that he truly made his mark when his song 'Make Me Smile ' topped the charts. This tune resonated with listeners so much that it frequently features in votes for top singles in chart history. The Performing Rights Society confirmed it as one of the most played records in British broadcasting. Steve recently spoke about how sad he was when Steve Wright died in February. He said it "shattered" him because they had been friends since the 1960s.
