Teaching in higher education can be unpredictable, but it can also teach life lessons, especially in the diversity of human thought.
Spain’s economy in the Americas was reliant on the agrarian industries and ranching that increasingly defined Texas. While the inhospitable environment in some regions dissuaded settlement and subsequent economic development, it did not stand alone in the way of Spain’s ambitions. Texas was a precarious place.
Prior to revealing this key point, though, one student voiced a different take-away. The student said land has always been a valuable investment and that the period in question makes little difference. The answer was both intriguing and accurate. For most of human history, economies were agrarian-based and consequently land-based. Even today, real estate is an indispensable asset.
