Bowel cancer is on the rise among people under 50 globally, with experts suggesting a common childhood infection may be partly to blame.

With bowel cancer cases rising alarmingly in younger populations, two world-leading cancer experts have raised concerns that a common childhood infection may be a key factor behind this increase.

A recent discussion between two world-leading cancer experts has highlighted that a specific type of E. coli, often contracted in childhood, could contribute to the early stages of cancer development. Dr Ng, who has spent over 20 years researching bowel cancer, noted that the rate of increase in young adults is particularly steep for those in their 20s.

Dr Ng echoed this, adding that most of her younger patients lead healthy lifestyles, which only adds to the mystery. E. coli, short for Escherichia coli, is a bacterium that can cause infections in the gut, urinary tract, and intestines. In a 2020 study published by researchers at the Hubrecht Institute and the Princess Máxima Centre for Paediatric Oncology in the Netherlands, the strain of E. coli was linked to bowel cancer development.
