Victoria will host the 2026 Commonwealth Games, in an event that will be held predominantly in the regions. 7NEWS

When the state government entered exclusive negotiations with the games’ governing body in February, Andrews said it would drive investment in Victoria’s infrastructure and tourism sectors.

He also flagged that the 2026 games would shift away from Melbourne and instead be held in the regions. In February, Ballarat Mayor Daniel Moloney said years of investing in the region’s sporting facilities placed the city in a good position to host the games. Greater Bendigo Mayor Andrea Metcalf said her city also had the infrastructure to host sports like tennis, basketball, and volleyball.Birmingham in England will host the games later this year. It was originally meant to hold the event in 2026 but it was brought forward when the South African city of Durban defaulted as 2022 host.

Western Australia earlier pulled its plans to bid for the games, while New South Wales and South Australia did not indicate interest and Queensland is focused on the 2032 Olympics.Melbourne previously hosted in 2006.
