An increasing number of younger women are being diagnosed with breast cancer despite the common misconception it is an older woman’s disease. Katie Elson, 29, first raised her concerns with her GP after discovering a small lump in her breast, which grew over time - but was told she was too young to have breast cancer.

Currently - Australian women over 50 are invited to have a free breast screen every two years, however, those under 50 must register themselves. Professor Bruce Mann, who is a specialist breast surgeon, says the current screening program must be reformed to support at-risk women, regardless of their age. “The screening system is not addressing those women less than 50 who are destined to get cancer - and there’s a lot of them,” he said.
