Almost $50 million worth of fines for breaching COVID19 restrictions have gone unpaid in NSW and lawyers say it's due to confusion and unemployment. 9News

9News can reveal only 15 per cent of these fines have been paid.Confusion and financial situations are being blamed for COVID-19 fines going unpaid in NSW.

The other reason the fines are not being paid is that people can't afford them after losing work or employment as a result of the pandemic. Fines were issued for offences ranging from failing to self-isolate or not wearing a mask to lying to a contact tracer, exceeding limits on gatherings and disobeying travel limits.

Ms Diec warned if people want to contest the fines, without appropriate legal advice, they run the risk of a larger fine.
