Australia have won the third and final T20 International against England thanks to a captain's knock from Aaron Finch and an unbeaten 39 from Mitch Marsh.

A dead rubber it may have been as far as the series was concerned, but Australia have reclaimed from England the title they lost on Sunday as the world’s top-ranked short-form side, accounting for their hosts in the third and final T20 by five wickets.

It was far from a faultless chase, the home side’s sloppy fielding denying them a chance to apply maximum pressure in the middle overs while the game remained there to be won. Finch awas inexplicably put down of 27 off Mark Wood by Jonny Bairstow – filling in behind the stumps for the rested Jos Buttler – who insisted a skied chance to mid-wicket was his. It wasn’t an isolated incident.

When asked if he wanted to make the finisher role his own in this T20 team, he added that batting through the death overs is a responsibility he relishes. Earlier, the five Australian bowlers used by Finch went to work after the decision was taken to send a weakened England in. Without Buttler, Mitch Starc and Josh Hazlewood set the agenda during the power play, the latter finding the edge of Tom Banton with his third ball in a T20 international since the 2016 World Cup in India. By the time the first six overs were wrapped up, England had only made it to 1/33 – their joint slowest start for five years.
