Discover the home of Laure Prouvost, a major contemporary artist, in the industrial district of Sint-Jans Molenbeek in Brussels. Despite being French, Prouvost won the UK's Turner Prize in 2013 and has a playful sense of humor and a unique perspective on everyday objects.
The only indication a major contemporary artist lives in this drab street in Sint-Jans Molenbeek , one of Brussels ’ old industrial districts, is the hand-painted sign on a set of double doors. “Votre voiture est très, très belle!” it reads. “Mais pas garé devant notre porte.” (“Your car is very, very beautiful! But don’t park in front of our door.”) The rather bizarre description of cars as “very, very beautiful!” gives the game away if you’re at all familiar with the work of Laure Prouvost .
The artist, who won the UK’s prestigious Turner Prize in 2013 despite being French (more on that later), has both a playful sense of humour and the ability to view quotidian objects with a sense of wonder. Prouvost studied fine art at London’s Central Saint Martins and spent 18 years living and working in the UK. She’s also married to an Englishman, the art curator Nick Aiken
