Laure Prouvost plays with rubbish, nature, words and stories. The game is now on at ACCA.
The only indication a major contemporary artist lives in this drab street in Sint-Jans Molenbeek, one of Brussels’ old industrial districts, is the hand-painted sign on a set of double doors. “Votre voiture est très, très belle!” it reads. “Mais pas garé devant notre porte.”
Inside, the artist and four young assistants are adding finishing touches to a collection of artificial birds’ legs. A sketch shows the finished product: a flamingo with a knotted neck and a pink ball in its beak. “Funny birds,” says Prouvost without looking up. Also making the trip are some of the delicate mobiles hanging from the beams of the Molenbeek studio. On closer inspection, they’re composed of urban detritus - fragments of circuit board, broken audio cassettes and a charred phone case, for example - paired with nature’s cast-offs such as feathers and shells.
What is fairly certain is that Prouvost was born and raised in a suburb of Lille in northern France. “My family was in textiles and was well-off until everything crashed in China,” she says. “My grandfather had a beautiful kind of chateau and we lived in the gardener’s house. It was nice.”
