Its believed the copper plaques were stolen to be resold.abc.net.au/news/tweed-heads-copper-plaque-grave-theft/104251206A Queensland-New South Wales border community has slammed a "desperate" and "very low" act of vandalism involving the ransacking of a cemetery.
Ms Carruth suspects the plaques – which are made of copper — may have been stolen to resell as scrap metal. She said council would conduct a security review, especially since it is not the first time cemeteries in the area have been raided.from Murwillumbah Lawn Cemetery and Tweed Valley Cemetery. "On top of that, we've also had quite a big slowdown in China, in their economy — in particular buildings where you would have a great demand for copper, especially into high-rises with the wirings and things like that."
Energy Queensland, the state's government-owned electricity company, submitted to the inquiry that there was a direct link between increases in copper prices and theft of the metal from its facilities. The state's department of Transport and Main Roads submitted that copper cable was regularly stolen from its assets and construction sites.
