Let’s cut to the chase. Rugby league is going through a seismic transformation in this country to make it less dangerous and for a singularly surprising reason.
Yes, for some time it has been whispered that older legends of the game have suffered dementia on a far more frequent basis than the general population. The difference is that such stories are now being published. A few weeks ago the story emerged that Johnny Raper and Billy Smith, two former legends of the St George Dragons who played together for over a decade are now in the same small nursing home and shuffle past each other in the corridor without recognising each other.
And then came news last week that Brett Horsnell, a journeyman player for a decade with the Parramatta Eels and Gold Coast Titans and still just 51-years-old, has suffered 51 concussions. He posted on Facebook: “So, for those of you who are disbelievers about concussions. I’ve just spent four days in hospital with bleeding on the brain. Luckily close to the bone so no damage done this time! Another four staples in my skull!”And now to the biggest news of all.
