Farmers in the Ord Valley wrap up their biggest maize season on record, with ongoing drought leaving a gap in supply from the major corn-growing regions in the east.
Maize has been grown in the Ord for around 30 years but only recently has become a key crop for farmers in the area.Pioneer Seeds area sales manager Andrew Dieckmann said rapid growth of the Ord maize industry had been driven by the"The client has taken three significant boatloads out of Wyndham, primarily because he can't get his tonnage out of the eastern seaboard," Mr Dieckmann said.
"It seems to be attributed to better water management and some cooler, milder temperatures that's actually helped the later planted corn in the valley promote a higher yield right to the end.
