BREAKING: Prime Minister ScottMorrisonMP has warned Australians across the country to 'guard against complacency,' saying, 'Please don't think that any of the states or territories are immune.'
Marissa CalligerosAt his press conference this afternoon, the Prime Minister was asked about the prospect of paid pandemic leave for Australians who contract coronavirus and concerns that people in Melbourne are avoiding getting tested because they can't afford not to work while waiting for their results.
"This country has never seen a level of income support provided by a federal government like they're seeing now. District Officer Chief Superintendent Mark Wheeler said they had already seen up to 100,000 vehicles a day through the five road checkpoints in that region. From noon on Friday, travellers from every state except Victoria will be able to enter with a valid border declaration — carrying a $4000 fine for false information — stating they had not been in the hotspot within the past 14 days. All others will be refused entry with no option to quarantine.
Since the new declaration system came into effect last Friday, 238 vehicles have been turned around by Gold Coast police. A total of 7800 vehicles with valid declarations had been randomly checked to ensure they were not attempting to enter against the rules.Prime Minister Scott Morrison, who spoke with Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews this morning, said now was not the time for people in other states to become complacent.
"And a reminder to everyone else around the country, against complacency, to stay on our guard, to be patient and to be conscientious."Prime Minister Scott Morrison says tomorrow's national cabinet meeting will address the coronavirus surge in Victoria and look at the risk to other states.
