When Prime Minister Scott Morrison talks about people thrown into financial hardship by coronavirus, he often points out they’re in this situation through "no fault of their own".

But comments such as this are also a sign of how the government's attitude, and rhetoric, around unemployment has been forced to change because of the coronavirus shock.A government that has repeatedly rejected calls to raise unemployment benefits has now doubled the payment virtually overnight for a six-month period, and is going out of its way to tell people it's OK to receive this support.

Australian National University professor Peter Whiteford has argued Australia's unemployment benefits are also low by international standards.
