In the midst of national domestic violence and housing crises, one service is looking to landlords to help solve both.
An innovative program is partnering with landlords and property managers to house family and domestic violence survivors.
It's choices like this which advocates hope will have a domino effect as the nation grapples with housing and domestic violence crises.The Mottas are part of a program run by Orana House, which for nearly half-a-century has supported women and children escaping domestic violence in Western Australia.
"'Too young,' they said, 'No rental history in her own name,' but usually no response at all," Nina wrote. By talking through those statistics with real estate agents and landlords, Ms Goodchild said people quickly realised the impact they could be having."I think one of the big problems is that a lot of people didn't know there was an opportunity to provide support."Mr Motta said despite some initial trepidation, their tenant — who continues to be supported by Orana — had been "wonderful".
"When women aren't able to access crisis accommodation or temporary housing, they are having to sleep on someone's couch, they're having to sleep in their cars, they're having to move from one place to another to access housing which takes them away from their crucial support networks," she said.
