Professor Richard Scolyer has admitted he “couldn’t be happier” after his latest MRI brain scan showed no recurrence of his glioblastoma brain cancer, ten months since it presented with a seizure while in Poland last year.

Australian of the Year recipient Professor Richard Scolyer has revealed a major update on his cancer diagnosis after undergoing a high-risk, world-first treatment.

Immunotherapy had initially been developed by the professor and his colleague, Professor Georgina Long to activate a melanoma patient’s own immune system, eventually making advanced melanoma a curable disease. “I had an MRI scan on Monday morning and it’s come back as all clear. This is 10 months after I first presented, I was in Poland and I had a seizure – thankfully my wife Katie was there, I could’ve died at the time,” he told Sky News Australia’s Erin Molan on Friday night.

“I guess what’s relevant is that I’m undergoing a new form of therapy that’s never been tried in brain cancer before.” He also said he was really lucky to not have suffered any side effects so far, however the full impact of the treatment is not fully known due to a lack of extensive trialing with other patients.
