An Adelaide couple stuck on a cruise ship for two weeks after six Asian countries refused to allow them to dock because of coronavirus fears say they are glad to be home but boat cruises are fun.

Twenty ill people were tested on board the Westerdam before passengers disembarked, but all came back negative.

"You just go through this uncomfortable emotional turmoil where 'what's going on' and you're just seriously worried that at the same time they're going to announce that the virus is on your boat," Mr Holst said. "We were all watching with fear and trepidation what was happening with the [Diamond] Princess in Yokohama and you're thinking 'please don't let that happen to us' and that sort of tension and pressure is disturbing and distressing and you wouldn't wish it on anybody."

Holland America chief executive officer Stein Kruse blamed"a terrible and unfortunate misunderstanding" for keeping the ship at sea for so long and said US officials had worked closely with Cambodian counterparts to secure a resolution. "We are pleased with the successful resolution of this challenging journey that was complicated by unfounded fears stemming from erroneous information with respect to the medical condition of Westerdam's guests and crew," he said in a blog post.It said passengers had received full refunds of their fares and future cruise credit.
