A devoted son who pulled a trigger and granted his father his final wish has escaped prison has been praised as ‘courageous’.

Glenn Stratton, 54, faced the Victorian Supreme Court on Thursday after pleading guilty to one charge of aiding and abetting his father Colin’s suicide.

He called his son and asked for help when he realised side-effects from the chemotherapy meant he was unable to load the gun and pull the trigger. The pair exchanged goodbyes and said they loved each other, before Stratton closed his eyes and pulled the trigger. “They also understand how important it was for him to be able to end his life on his own terms when the pain and burden of illness became too great for him,” Justice Hollingworth said.
