Google has been doing deals with Apple and Australian telcos Telstra and Optus to maintain it's supremacy. Now legal cases are posing an 'existential threat'. So how likely is a break up of the search giant?

Now the tech firm, owned by multi-trillion-dollar US parent company Alphabet , is facing a global backlash, due to deals it has been striking with the likes of Apple — and even with Australian telcos Telstra and Optus.

"Antitrust law in is particularly powerful in that it can strike to the heart of a company.Google's parent company Alphabet is worth $US2 trillion dollars . That deal was worth an estimated $US20 billion to Apple in 2022, according to court documents unlocked this year. The default could be manually changed on their device — if they realised."Everything that you search for and everything that you do, essentially comes back to this one company. Is that a good thing?"The last big win of this kind was back in the 1990s against Microsoft.

Here in Australia, Google is also being challenged by the consumer watchdog, which is investigating its powers in search. Google developed the Android platform, and its deals with Telstra and Optus had been in place since at least 2017, according to the ACCC. As this process plays out, the DoJ is flagging that it could push to break up one of the world's most powerful tech companies.
