A fourth dose of the vaccine is set to be recommended for people over 50, as the country faces a winter jump in COVID hospitalisations.
While more than 95 per cent of people over 16 are fully vaccinated, the number of people getting boosters has slumped since February.About 2,413,000 people had received a fourth dose as of Monday, 59 per cent of people who were eligible.
"The booster doses provide additional protection against severe disease, hospitalisation and death as compared with the primary course." Australian Medical Association vice-president Chris Moy said ATAGI had been waiting for the appropriate time to expand eligibility. "They didn't want to actually end up firing the shot too early and then end up with a new variant and then make a decision about a fifth shot, where there has been no evidence at all."
