A rise in detections of a new sub-variant of Omicron is expected to lead to NSW recording a jump in coronavirus cases as the level of immunity in the community wanes
.
Between the weeks ending May 28 and June 4, the proportion of infections genomically sequenced as the BA.2 variant halved, while BA.5 infections tripled. The figures, however, are not necessarily representative of rates in the community, as only samples from international arrivals and those hospitalised for the virus are sequenced.
The latest available data shows at least 11,000 people have been infected by COVID-19 more than once – however, that number is likely to be significantly underestimated as highly contagious sub-variants have emerged.
