COVID-19 risk: natural infection vs. vaccine induced immunity SSRN PittTweet covid COVID19 SARSCoV2 natural vaccination
By Pooja Toshniwal PahariaMay 4 2023Reviewed by Lily Ramsey, LLM In a recent study posted to the SSRN* preprint server, researchers evaluated the immune protection conferred by previous severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 infection and/or coronavirus disease 2019 vaccines against reinfection.
The authors searched the PubMed Central database between 1 March 2020 and 1 June 2022 for randomized controlled trials and other studies assessing protection against SARS-CoV-2 reinfection. Individual-level data were obtained from United States government-funded harmonized COVID-19 vaccine randomized controlled trials evaluating Janssen’s Ad26.COV2.S, Moderna’s mRNA-1273, Novovax’s NVX-CoV2373, and AstraZeneca’s AZD1222 vaccines.
Data adjustments were made for race, sex, age, ethnicity, comorbidities, and SARS-CoV-2 exposure risk at baseline. All trials identified individuals with prior COVID-19 history using SARS-CoV-2 nucleocapsid protein-based immunoassays. Among one-dose Janssen vaccinees, hybrid immunity provided greater immune protection compared to vaccinations alone . Too few SARS-CoV-2 infections occurred in other vaccine trials to infer data by comparing hybrid immune protection to that conferred by vaccination.

Wildlife in Britain found free of SARS-CoV-2, but novel virus discovered in stoatsScientists in the United Kingdom have conducted a large-scale screening for sarbecoviruses and pan-coronaviruses in British Wildlife to investigate the occurrence of widespread spillover events. They have identified a novel minacovirus in stoats recently introduced to the Orkney Islands.

Researchers develop gene-edited stem cells to reduce arrhythmias in heart attack patientsIn a recent study published in the journal Cell Stem Cell, researchers hypothesized that pacemaker-like activity of human pluripotent stem cell-derived cardiomyocytes (hPSC-CMs) resulted in engraftment arrhythmias (EAs), which hampers the clinical use of cell-based therapy using hPSC-CMs for treatment of myocardial infarction (MI).
