The premier of the French-speaking Canadian province of Quebec announced that adult residents who refuse to get vaccinated against COVID-19 will be charged a financial penalty.
He says the levy will only apply to people who do not qualify for medical exemptions. It is the first time a government in Canada has announced a financial penalty for people who refuse to be vaccinated against COVID-19. He says about 10 per cent of adults in Quebec are unvaccinated, but they represent about 50 per cent of intensive care patients.
In a tweet, Gates says: “As countries experience their omicron wave health systems will be challenged. Most of the severe cases will be unvaccinated people. Once omicron goes through a country then the rest of the year should see far fewer cases so COVID can be treated more like seasonal flu.”
