Farmers counting the cost of severe wind damage in Tasmania's north at the weekend expect it to be in the millions of dollars, with animal welfare concerns growing that dairies without power are still unable to milk.

Cows crushed by trees, flipped irrigators, smashed fences and no power; they're the challenges farmers across northern Tasmania face as they clean up in the wake of the weekend's storms.Wind gusts of over 100 kilometres per hour brought down trees and cut power to several dairy farms in northern TasmaniaThere are concerns some cows have gone three days without milking because of power cuts, with many farmers still disconnected.

"It flattened quite a lot of our sheds and we reckon it's close to 100 hundred trees, and we lost a few cows to a falling tree," Mr Atkins said."We had a storm like this in the late 80's that flattened a big heap of trees, but we've had nothing like this, we've never lost power for more than 24-48 hours, we're on track to double that."

"We lost power for a couple of days; we still don't have power at our robotic dairy so we're running it off a generator 24/7," he said. "Most farmers have got generators that they're running but we're lucky we've got wood heaters in the house because it'd be cold otherwise.Concern for unmilked cowsThe Tasmanian Farmers and Graziers Association is still working to get an accurate picture of the damage."The concern we have is that it's an animal welfare issue, some cows haven't been milked for three days now, last night in some areas it was minus 8 degrees," he said.
