All eyes are on how well Labor will manage an expanded crossbench with key legislation, such as its climate bill, reliant on their support.

The 47th federal parliament will open with pomp and ceremony on Tuesday, the first sitting day since Anthony Albanese was elected prime minister.

New ACT senator David Pocock is shaping up as a power player as the Greens mull whether to block or amend the government’s climate legislation, which would enshrine Australia’s emissions-reduction target at 43 per cent below 2005 levels by 2030. It is a constitutional requirement for a Speaker to be elected before any Parliamentary business takes place.

The Address in Reply, the formal acknowledgement by the House to the Governor-General for the speech given at an opening of Parliament, is expected to begin on Tuesday night. “which will make the climate crisis worse” and demand Albanese drop the stage 3 tax cuts for people earning more than $200,000 a year, legislated by the former government.
