Crowded classes: Schools promised four years ago yet to start construction | lucy_carroll

Half a dozen new public schools that were announced in 2018 are yet to start construction, as pressure on packed classrooms in Sydney’s booming north and south-west push enrolments beyond capacity., including Gregory Hills and Westmead primary schools, a new high school at Edmundson Park and a primary and high school at Macquarie Park Education Precinct, remain in planning phases. A kindergarten to year 12 school at Rydalmere also announced that year is yet to move past the planning stage.

Kate Laney, who has two children at Gledswood Hills Public School in the city’s south-west, said she moved to neighbouring Gregory Hills on the assumption a local primary school would be built while her children were young enough to attend.Gledswood Hills has hit double its enrolment capacity, with an expected 1140 students this year and Westmead Public, just north of the proposed new school, is about 25 per cent over capacity with about 1100 students.

Mitchell said a number of schools had been delivered in western Sydney, including in Jordan Springs, north of Penrith, Dr Michael Freelander, the member for Macarthur in south-west Sydney, said the government had been “promising Gregory Hills public school for years”.“They knew how many families were moving into the area, but it still hasn’t started and the land’s been there for several years. It’s very poor planning and putting pressure on families who are spending long periods driving children to school they move the population has been there for a long time,” Freelander said.
