Seven threatened plant and animal species on the World Heritage-listed site also had up to three-quarters of their island habitat burnt, a long-awaited Queensland government scientific report has found.
, has now singled out the island’s foredune systems as most at risk with “long-term and extensive impacts”.
With camping sites along the east coast, the areas are also accessed by many people and vehicles. Large portions experienced intense fire in 2020, with the report finding 5500 hectares suffered “catastrophic” or “high” potential ecological impact. The quail was among three threatened animal species to see such a sizeable habitat scorching, beyond the seven others with more than 10 per cent of theirs burned. Among the latter, fire was estimated to have touched 27 per cent of the tiny wattle’s entire statewide habitat.was found to have faced no evidence of negative impacts.
University of Queensland biogeographer Patrick Moss said foredune vegetation loss could trigger more sand blows — though more research was needed to understand exactly how the landmarks form.
