Residents in one Australian jurisdiction have been put on cyclone watch and warned to brace for wet, windy weather over Christmas.
A monsoonal weather system in the region has prompted the Bureau of Meteorology to issue the tropical cyclone watch on Friday as northwestern coastal communities could be hit with strong winds in the evening of Christmas Day.
That category is the weakest type of cyclone but can still produce wind speeds that can cause damage to homes, crops, trees and caravans. “Tropical systems can intensify quickly and shift direction, so it’s a good time to remind Northern Territorians to check their emergency plan and cyclone kits before they go on their Christmas holiday break and to take extra care on the roads.”
“Your emergency kits should be stocked and ready. You should determine now where you and your family will take shelter if required to do so,” he said. A severe thunderstorm warning is also in place for South East Queensland, with heavy rainfall expected for parts of Somerset, Lockyer Valley, Sunshine Coast and Moreton Bay council areas.
