A man has died while trying to rescue his young daughter from the surf at Seven Mile Beach in Lennox Head overnight. A family was swimming in shallow water when their 11-year-old daughter was swept out to sea on a body board. 7NEWS

The couple quickly leapt into action and swam out to rescue her, but while the girl and her mother made it back to shore, the 45-year-old father did not.Two police officers, who were the first on the scene, rushed into the water to try to find the man but were unsuccessful.

Surf lifesavers later retrieved his body from the water about 7pm and paramedics began CPR, however, he was unable to be revived and died at the scene.Seven Mile Beach was not patrolled at the time.A report will be prepared for the coroner.
