A police investigation into an alleged hate crime involving a damaged Sikh holy text has been dropped after it was ruled there was no malicious intent.

West Yorkshire Police said the book was found on St Anne's Road, in Headingley, on 12 July, outside the house of a member of the Sikh community.However, after "extensive inquiries" it said officers were "satisfied that there was no malicious intent". A police spokesperson said: "West Yorkshire Police recognises the significant impact that hate incidents or hate crimes can have in our communities and will always treat any reports of such incidents seriously.

"We would like to thank the local Sikh community for its level-headed response to this incident, which demonstrates the value and importance of our well-established relationship."
