A government-branded fake myGov scam has robbed vulnerable Australians of $640.98 as an email security platform reveals how to identify and protect yourself from phishing.
Emails with the subject “You have an outstanding refund from MyGov !” has circulated with customers told they were owed $640.98.
The email addresses a generic “Dear customer” with a link address that opened users to a myGov login page – a phishing website dressed up in government branding to feign legitimacy. A text message wrote “myGov: Your income return of $1800.34 could not be processed due to insufficient information supplied please update immediately at My.update-income-portal-net”.MailGuard said it was not the first time it intercepted and blocked a scam like this with incidents recorded in November, October and June 2022.A myGov spokesperson reminded users it would never send users an email or SMS with a hyperlink directing you to sign in to your myGov account.
Ways to determine whether an email may be a scam is if it does not address you by your name, appears to be from a legitimate company but uses poor English or omits personal details that a legitimate sender would include, are from businesses you are not expecting to hear from and take you to a landing page or website that it not the legitimate URL of the company.
