The MCG pitch is deemed unsafe in a Sheffield Shield match in what may prove to be a significant embarrassment for Cricket Australia in the build-up to its marquee Boxing Day Test.
Play has been abandoned on day one of a Sheffield Shield match at the MCG because of dangerous pitch conditions, less than three weeks out from the Boxing Day Test between Australia and New Zealand.Play was halted early in the second session on day one after some of Western Australia's batsmen were hit by rising deliveriesThe pitch is not expected to be used for the upcoming Boxing Day Test
Match officials called a halt to the match 45 minutes into the second session on day one of the fixture between Victoria and Western Australia, before later abandoning play for the day. They hope play will resume tomorrow, with ground staff to work on the pitch this afternoon before an inspection in the morning.
Western Australian batsmen Shaun Marsh, Cameron Green and Marcus Stoinis were all hit by deliveries from Victoria's fast bowlers, which rose sharply and unexpectedly on a lively pitch. Peter Siddle rattled both Marsh and Stoinis with nasty rising deliveries that crashed into their helmets during fearsome spells either side of the lunch break, while a fierce Andrew Fekete ball fired into Stoinis's ribs.
