Australia's most venomous jellyfish has arrived early at a north Queensland beach, where eight of the creatures have been caught during a single drag of the water by lifesavers.

Lifesavers at Eimeo Beach at Mackay caught eight box jellyfish during a single drag of the water this week."We've got conditions that make it ripe for box jellyfish to appear on any beach — we've got a lot of rain, it's quite still, it's hot," Ms Hegerty said. The severe tropical cyclone crossed the coast in December 2023 near the community of Wujal Wujal, about 120 kilometres north-west of Cairns.
Ms Masters said it was "quite surprising" because the they were found in the centre of the beach, where the flags would usually be.Katelyn Masters caught eight box jellyfish during a routine check this week.Ms Masters said she increasingly saw young people not wearing stinger suits looking to swim in secluded spots from the main beach.The lifesaver said box jellyfish could be found even in shallow waters.
Jason Wells, regional manager for North Area branch for Surf Lifesaving Queensland, said there had been increased sightings of both this year.
